JPIC Roma at COP21: Reactions from Scientists to Final Draft

    Myles Allen (University of Oxford): Achieving a balance between sources and sinks of greenhouse gases in the second half of this century will require net carbon dioxide emissions to be reduced, in effect, to zero. It seems governments understand this, even if they couldn’t quite bring themselves to say so. To have a good chance of staying below 2 degrees, we need to aim for 1.5 degrees anyway, and it is sensible to acknowledge that 2 degrees itself is hardly “safe”.

  Key points The agreement is partly legally binding and partly voluntary. • To peak greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible and achieve a balance between sources and sinks of greenhouse gases in the second half of this century • To keep global temperature increase “well below” 2C (3.6F) and to pursue efforts to limit it to 1.5C • To review progress every five years • $100 billion a year in climate finance for developing countries by 2020, with a commitment to further finance in the future.

Climate Action Network (CAN): Media Advisory     Civil society responds as final draft of Paris Climate Change Agreement is released   “This agreement represents the end of the fossil fuel era, as the Catholic Church has been advocating. The 1.5C target and the goal of net zero emissions enshrines the moral imperative to leave fossil fuels in the ground. This is a meaningful step forward on the path to protecting the poor and most vulnerable from climate change.

JPIC Roma at COP21: Day 3

    December 6, Day of Celebration for the Franciscan Family in Paris at the OFM Convent in Rue Marie Rose. Nearly 200 persons joined in the joyous occasion. The day began with an inspiring and encouraging reflection by Fr. Michael Perry, OFM, General Minister of the OFMs.
