The recorded deaths are five times higher than last year’s 281 fatalities. Authorities confirm that the disease has reached all the districts in the country, including rural areas. This outbreak occurs amidst political, economic, and social instability in the country.

We pray for COP 28, with a special focus on the decision-makers. The UN Environment Programme’s annual Emissions Gap report warns that the Earth could warm up to 2.9°C, even with current climate pledges. It is of paramount importance for governments to take decisive climate actions to curb the rise in Earth’s temperature. The repercussions of anthropic and technocratic approaches are already evident, leading us to perceive ourselves as isolated individuals, often forgetting our interconnectedness within the human family and the environment.

We thank God for the creative innovations that people bring to create new energy sources. The Pavegen tiles, initiated by Laurence Kemball-Cook in 2009, aim to generate clean, off-grid electricity through the power of a simple footstep. Laurence created 750 prototypes to finally develop a floor tile that converts footsteps into clean energy. He got the idea while walking through Victoria train station, which receives more than 75 million visitors a year, envisioning that foot traffic could be transformed into electricity.

Let’s pray for the Dominican Republic, where heavy rains have triggered floods, resulting in at least 24 deaths and 17.800 people displaced. Numerous houses and buildings have been completely destroyed, accompanied by electricity cuts, damage to bridges, and roads. According to Dominican President Abinader, this is the most significant event the country has ever experienced, and he extends condolences to all the families who have lost their loved ones. Authorities emphasize that climate change may amplify these risks, posing a potential threat in the future.

We thank God for the steps that the private sector is taking to care for both people and the planet. In Thailand, a supermarket has initiated the practice of swapping plastic wrappings for banana leaves, promoting a more environmentally friendly approach. The supermarket, located in Chiang Mai, is the driving force behind this initiative, which has gained widespread attention on social media. Vegetables are now wrapped in pesticide-safe banana leaves, and the leaves are fastened with a flexible piece of bamboo, significantly reducing the amount of plastic used.

Let’s pray for the Horn of Africa, where the El Niño phenomenon has intensified the rainy season, resulting in torrential rains in Somalia (29 victims), Ethiopia (20 victims), and Kenya (15 victims). People have lost their homes, livestock, and farmland, leaving more than 300,000 people displaced in East Africa. Somalia, which experienced the worst drought in 40 years since 2020, is now completely covered by water in the southwest of the country. This significantly affects the population that relies on livestock and agriculture.

We thank God for the visionary ideas of people around the world who promote recycling. Ifedolapo Runsewe, an entrepreneur from Nigeria, founded Freee Recycle in 2018. The company transforms discarded tires into paving bricks and tiles. Billions of tires are discarded every year, contributing to a global problem that damages the environment and serves as a breeding ground for disease-carrying mosquitoes.

We pray for Sudan, where 1300 people have been killed, 2000 injured, and 310 remain missing after the Sudanese Rapid Support Forces (RSF) besieged a camp for displaced people on November 2nd when they attacked an army base in West Darfur. These atrocities are considered part of a wider campaign by the RSF and its allied militias to eradicate the non-Arab Masalit tribe from West Darfur. Although the UN and governments around the world have condemned the atrocities, the RSF continues spreading violence in the form of ethnic cleansing.

We thank God for the people who use their knowledge and expertise to raise awareness in society. In Bolivia, Silveira Cutipa, a member of the Aymara Indigenous Peoples and a professional chemist, founded the startup Suma Qhana Jabones Kolla. Her journey began while working at the Municipality of El Alto, Bolivia, where she was responsible for quality control of frying oils. It struck her that the regulations on solid waste management mentioned PET or glass bottles, organic and non-organic materials, but this specific type of urban waste was overlooked.
