Prayer for Empowering Girls and Young Women Through Innovation and Education

We thank God for the incredible efforts to support girls and young women worldwide. Jamila Mayanja, a Ugandan entrepreneur and founder of the Smart Girls Foundation, created the Solar Smart Bag—a waterproof backpack with a solar panel to charge a lamp, reusable sanitary pads, a menstrual hygiene booklet, and a sewing kit. This innovation helps girls in rural Uganda manage their periods, study at night without harmful kerosene lamps, and attend school regularly. Made from recycled plastic, the bag also supports a circular economy and a sustainable future.

A Prayer for Peace and Unity Amid Global Unrest: Venezuela, UK, and Nigeria

Let us pray for all the countries experiencing severe unrest and protests. Following Nicolás Maduro’s re-election in Venezuela, citizens have denounced a lack of transparency and alleged fraud, leading to street protests, unofficial detentions, and heavy police repression. Twenty-four people have died during the unrest. In the UK, far-right riots erupted last week after three young girls were killed in a knife attack in Southport. Misinformation online falsely identified the suspect as an Islamist migrant, sparking attacks on immigration centers and mosques.

Prayer for Healing and Hope Amidst Climate Change Disasters

We pray for all those affected by climate change. In recent years, we have witnessed extreme weather conditions across the globe. Two weeks ago, two landslides in Ethiopia claimed around 257 lives, with the death toll potentially rising. In Manila, half a million people were evacuated, and 21 lost their lives after Typhoon Gaemi wreaked havoc, causing widespread destruction and capsizing a tanker, leading to a massive oil spill. In Kerala, India, landslides have killed 196 people, with 200 still missing and 9,000 evacuated.

Prayer for Sustainable Education and Environmental Stewardship in Cambodia

We thank God for the efforts of people striving to build a better world for both humanity and the planet. In Cambodia, Ouk Vanday, a hotel manager, quit his job to start building a school. He began with coconut trees as tables, chairs, and other study materials. Then, noticing the increasing volume of waste in Phnom Penh, he started collecting it to build additional parts of the school.

Prayer for Peace and Healing in Somalia Amidst Ongoing Violence

Let’s pray for Somalia, where a car bomb targeting a busy café in the capital, where security and government workers meet at night, has killed at least nine people and injured more than 20. The individuals were watching the final of the Euro 2024 football cup when the bombing happened. The Al-Shabab group has claimed responsibility for the attack. This is not the first time that the group has targeted the government.

Prayer for Peace and Justice in Bangladesh Amidst Protests

We pray for Bangladesh, where thousands of students have been protesting against the quota system for government jobs that favor supporters of the current Prime Minister and people who led the country’s independence movement. The system reserves a third of job placements for family members of veterans who fought for the country’s independence from Pakistan in 1971. Around 32 million people are unemployed in the country, and students are calling for a system based on merit.

Gratitude for Indigenous Community’s Victory in Protecting Wirikuta Land in Mexico

We thank God for the tireless efforts of local communities and organizations to stop mining. In Mexico, the Wirikuta land, the most sacred place for the Wixárika indigenous peoples in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, is being protected. After 13 years of legal battles urging the government to dismiss the concessions of companies seeking to extract minerals and to return Wixárika land, at least 2,000 members of the indigenous community went to Mexico City to press the government to act.

Prayer for Nepal, India, and Bangladesh: Seeking Strength and Resilience Amid Monsoon Tragedies

Let’s pray for Nepal, India and Bangladesh, where monsoon rains are causing floods and landslides that affect people. Monsoon rains from June to September are known for causing death and destruction in South Asia. The current extreme weather conditions in recent years are worsening the situation. At least 14 people were killed last week in Nepal after floods and landslides hit the country. On July 12, two buses carrying more than 60 people were swept by a landslide into a river in Nepal, with three survivors rescued.
