We thank God for the people of good will who get together to make a difference. In Kenya, a youth group from Nairobi decided to act and transform the local Gatharaini river full of dumpsite, into a green space for their local community. In few months around 30 people rehabilitated one kilometer of the river, turning it into a green haven. Additional to the clearing of trash, they planted over 2000 trees and 800 bamboo shoots which will protect the river banks and purify the water.

We pray for France, which is experiencing massive strikes and protests in defiance of Macron’s pension reforms. Public anger rose when people knew that the government wants to hike the retirement age. Violence has intensified in recent days. The bill must pass to a review by the French Constitutional Council before becoming law. According to the President, the retirement system needs to be modified to keep it financed, while opponents propose another solution to increase taxes on the wealthy or companies.

We thank God for the efforts that lay people are making to protect the environment and biodiversity. 10.000 rural women in India, known as the Hargila army, joined forces to save the endangered bird species. The women protect the world’s rarest storks by honoring the owners of nesting trees as guardians. To get women out of their homes, Dr. Purnima organized baby showers during the storks’ breeding season and happy hatching ceremonies.

On Thursday morning, an explosion in a coal mine in Central Colombia killed 21 miners. A day earlier, the Cundinamarca governor told a local radio that at least 11 people died in the blast due to an accumulation of gases that exploded after a worker’s tool caused a spark. This spark spread through the connected legal mines. Colombia has numerous gold and coal mines, and incidents such as explosions frequently occur, especially due to illegal mining activities or lack of safety measures. Let’s pray for the miners and their families.

We pray for Malawi and Mozambique that during this week they were hit for the second time by Cyclone Freddy. 300 people have been killed and the death toll is still rising while hundreds remain missing. Local people are angered about the lack of relief and rescue services. The storm arrived for a second time after first making landfall in late February. The hard rain conditions made the search and rescue efforts hampered. The Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera has called for international aid to support their people.

Early this week, 54 people were rescued and 14 died when two boats sank off the coast of Tunisia. According to the National Guard, the migrants were from sub-Saharan Africa. On February 21, the Tunisian President Kais Saied said that migration from sub-Saharan Africa aimed to change Tunisia’s national identity and the National Party has led a campaign calling for the expulsion of immigrants to initiate demographic change in the country. These remarks have been condemned by advocacy groups describing them as a racist backlash.

We thank God for all the good that people are doing to build a better world. In the 1960’s, Nepal’s one-horned rhino population was reduced to less than 100, threatening them with extinction. Thanks to the effort of the military forces, NGOs and local communities who are fighting poachers, Nepal has become a global conservation leader. Yet Nepal’s latest rhino census reveals the number of rhinos has grown to 752. The rise is the result of the toughest anti-poaching approaches and innovative community-based conservation efforts.
