Derna started to bury its dead, mostly in mass graves. Rescue teams are still looking for wrecked buildings.

We thank God for all the creative ways companies are working to protect our mother Earth and support employment for people around the world. A company in Vietnam is reusing old pineapple skins to make natural soap that is better for the planet. FUWA3E is using old pineapples as a way of reducing waste and being supportive of our planet. It works by adding pineapple scraps to a big tub of sugar and water and letting it ferment.

We pray for Cameroon where at least three people were killed in an attack blamed on separatist rebels in the southwest of the country. We thank God for the grassroots and the civil society organizations who are working to protect the people and the planet. In a historic referendum on August 20th, 59% of Ecuadorian voters demonstrated their support for keeping over 726 million barrels of oil underground in the Yasuni National Park. The Choco Andino, a Natural Reserve close to Quito, also received 68% support forbidding mining exploitation in the territory. These binding sentences permanently ban oil drilling and mining extraction.

Let’s pray for Johannesburg, South Africa, where at least 70 people have died when a fire hit a migrant’s building. Firefighters are still dousing the smoldering debris. It is considered as one of the worst fire incidents in the city in recent years. According to authorities, the number of victims could rise as rescue workers continue to seek for people in the remaining floors. The building was declared an unsafe place, but it has been taken over by property gangs who rent out rooms to scores of people per room.

We pray for Gabon, where the military have taken power over the country, placing President Ali Bongo under house arrest. This situation came shortly after election results in which Bongo had been re-elected despite opposition complaints of fraud. President Bongo was first elected in 2009 following the death of his father, who ruled the country for 41 years. People in the region want transformation. Gabon is not the only former French colony in the region to experience a coup.
