We pray for Honduras, where 46 people have died in women’s prison gang violence. According to the prosecutor’s office, the number of the dead has ticked up as authorities identified remains, some of which were reduced to ash. The authorities said that violence broke out when a group of gang members entered a part of the prison controlled by a rival faction. The deadliest situation of prison violence in Honduras’ history raised questions regarding corruption within the prison system and law enforcement.

At least 41 people, 38 of them students, were massacred at a secondary school in Mpondwe town in Uganda close to the DRC border. The army and police of Uganda have blamed the Allied Democratic Front (ADF) armed group for the attack. This is one of the deadliest attacks in the country since 2010. In 2021, Uganda and DRC launched a joint offensive against the ADF to drive them out, but the measures have mostly failed. There are still people missing.

We thank God for the religious who are giving their lives to save the forest and empower people to protect biodiversity. In Ecuador, friar Giovanni Onore, a Marianist from Costigliole d’Asti, created the Otonga Foundation in 1997, with the aim of defending from destruction the forest located on the western slopes of the Andean Mountain range and to preserve biodiversity, while providing education to local children. His dream was born when he accompanied an Italian biologist to visit the forest.

We thank God for all the efforts that indigenous people are making to preserve their culture. The Tembe people in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest celebrate their culture as an attempt to protect their tradition and language. According to the leader of the Tembe, Sergio Muti Tembe, many indigenous groups have lost their culture, tradition, and language. That is why they continue their traditions with a six-day celebration that prepares girls and boys for adulthood. The rituals allow teenagers to assume their roles as women and men in the community.

We pray for Nigeria where at least 100 people have died after a boat capsized in the Niger River. The boat was carrying residents returning from a wedding when it capsized. Police and residents are still searching for survivors. 100 people have been rescued from the boat accident. According to the rescue teams, many people died because the accident happened at about 3am local time and many of the passengers were not wearing any protective gear like life vests.

Let’s pray for 79 migrants who have lost their lives after a fishing vessel capsized off the southern coast of Greece. The Greek coastguard said in a statement that the vessel sank in international waters. A large search and rescue operation was launched in the area, allowing rescuers to save 104 passengers. People include Egyptians, Syrians, Pakistanis, Afghans and Palestinians. The sinking could be one of the worst ever recorded on the feared central Mediterranean migration route.

We pray for Kosovo where tensions have risen between Albanian and Serb ethnic groups, after the Albanian group won a local election in Serbian-dominated areas. NATO peacekeeping groups in Kosovo have put up metal fences and barbed wire barriers in a northern town. Dozens of international soldiers and other protestors have been injured. Several countries have urged Kosovo and Serbian leaders to find a way to de-escalate tensions. May God give people clarity to stop the violent protests and allow them to dialogue to find a solution for their people.

Let’s pray for Canada where unprecedented fires have forced more than 16000 people from their homes. Dozens of firefighters have been fighting to control blazes. The blaze has grown to about 837 hectares, destroying and damaging many houses. People are tired, frustrated, and frightened. Authorities banned all activities in Nova Scotia. Many experts point to climate change as a cause of worsening extreme weather such as wildfires, heatwaves, and tropical storms.

We thank God for artist who are reusing and recycling things to create art. This is the case of Eugene Konboye, a Nigerian artist who is turning old plastic flip flops into works of art. He visits landfills and riverbanks to collect discarded flip flops, which are a popular footwear choice in Nigeria. He takes back those flip flops to his studio to clean and disinfect them. Once they are ready, he cuts them up and creates an upcycled masterpieces.

We pray for Guyana. On Sunday night, a fire killed 19 people, many of them indigenous students between 12-18 years old, from a rural part of the country. Nine people remain hospitalized in serious condition. According to officials, a student sparked a deadly blaze that ripped through the dormitory of a girls’ boarding school. The fire started when the 16 year old student got upset at having her mobile phone confiscated, after she was discovered having an affair with an older man.
