The vessel departed from Libya to Europe with hundreds of people men, 45 women and 56 children on it, including a baby born overnight at sea. The Italian NGO Emergency reported that the Maltese authorities have so far failed to heed calls for a rescue. They approached the Italian Maritime Rescue Coordination Center, which responded that the case falls under the mandate of the Maltese authorities.

We thank God for the innovative efforts of people to save our common home and to respond to their people’s needs. Paul Waweru, a Kenyan high school teacher, is using old laptop batteries to turn petrol-powered bikes into electric ones. He buys old batteries, checks them and takes the cells that can still hold a decent charge. Once he has enough, he configures them into battery packs to replace the internal combustion engines of existing scooters and bikes. A fully charged battery can travel 100 km.

We pray for Italy hit by heavy rains, causing several rivers to overflow in the Emilia Romagna and Marche regions. According to the reports, at least 13 people have died, and thousands have been evacuated. Many families have lost their houses and their economic activities. These unprecedented floods are just another effect of climate change. May God give hope to the people affected and who have lost everything.

Let’s pray for Myanmar where at least 54 people have died due to Cyclone Mocha which swept last weekend. Reliable information about the death toll and destruction is unclear. People affected told the media that probably hundreds of people died, and they still wait for help to arrive. According to the Rohingya Organization in UK, no humanitarian aid has reached the Rohingya people. There are rising concerns in flooded areas regarding the spread of waterborne diseases and the movement of landmines.

Let’s pray for Manipur, India, where clashes between the Meiteis community (mostly Hindus) and the tribal people (mostly Christians) caused the death of 12 inhabitants. The violence started after the state’s top court asked the Central Government to recommend to the Federal administration to allow the demand of the Meitei community to list them among Scheduled Tribes. This means having a special status to enjoy rights to farm on forest land, low-cost bank loans and government jobs.

A court in Kenya prosecuted a pastor facing possible terror-related charges in the deaths of more than 100 people, many of whom starved to death. According to survivors, the pastor had instructed them to fast to death before the world ends so that they could meet Jesus. People were paying the pastor. A search of the Pastor’s property in a remote area, found more than 100 bodies and dozens of mass graves dug out. The Pastor had already been arrested twice before in connection with the deaths of children.

We thank God for all the innovations happening around the world. A Scotland team has designed the Wave Swing, which captures the power of waves. It is anchored to the sea floor, floating just below the surface. When a wave passes over it, the top half of the machine is pushed down and compressed air inside springs it back up. This up and down motion can generate electricity. The Wave Swing can automatically adjust its height in water, allowing it to remain just below the wave line.
