Since the beginning of July, we have experienced the hottest days on record on the planet. Many places in the world such as Southern Europe, North America, Mexico, Japan, China, and other Asian countries are experiencing heatwaves that are affecting people and the planet, while many cities in India, United States, Turkey and Spain have suffered floods with several injured people and death victims. Let’s not get used to hearing about droughts, fires, heatwaves, floods, and many extreme weather conditions. Let’s continue working for climate justice where we are.

We pray for Sub-Saharan migrants in Tunisia. Two bodies have been found in a desert region near Tunisia’s border with Algeria. Hundreds of migrants have fled and some of them have been forced out of Tunisia’s port city of Sfax after racial tensions with locals. They were left to fend for themselves in harsh conditions in remote desert areas with little water and no food. Aid and rights groups have called for urgent aid and denounced Tunisia’s authorities.

We thank God for the companies who are investing in saving our Mother Earth. A company, Releaf bag, in Ukraine uses fallen tree leaves from urban areas to make paper bags. Leaves are collected from parks and residential areas, before they are cleaned and dried for storage. They are processed into paper bags without harming any single tree. Processing uses less resources than conventional paper with just 1/3 of the electricity usage and about 15 times less water. The paper bags decompose quicker than normal paper, in about 30 days.

We thank God for farmers who are sustaining the food systems and protecting Mother Earth. While many parts of Africa are losing forest due to monoculture, logging and charcoal making, small farmers from Senegal to Ethiopia to Malawi are bringing back trees. They are allowing previous suppressed trees to regenerate on their lands, resulting in improved crop yields, productive fruit harvest and a boost for carbon storage.

We pray for the indigenous people in the province of Jujuy Argentina, who have been protesting for an annulment of a constitutional reform that infringes their rights and give concessions for lithium extraction. The local government approved the reform without a referendum. This can cause healthy, environmental, cultural and social crises, risking access to water for many communities and the destruction of ancestral territories. On Saturday, June 18, there was a violent repression at the Purmamarca blockade.

Let’s pray for Iraq, where early this week thousands of fish were found dead on the shore southeast of the country. Environmental campaigners argue that the rise in temperature is leading to evaporation, reducing the water flow, which contributes to the lack of oxygen and high salinity. The water can no longer be used for agriculture, putting at risk many families, animals, and nature, causing a high number of people to migrate.

We thank God for the people who fight to protect their territory and people. Wang Enlin, a farmer in China, spent 16 years studying law to sue a case of Qihua Chemical Group company accusing it of contaminating their soil and rendering it untenable for crops. The farmer, who left school when he was 10 years old, couldn’t afford law books so he gave his local bookstore owner corn in exchange for letting him read and copy information by hand.

We pray for France where protests have erupted after police shot dead a 17-year-old boy on Tuesday. The officer who opened fire is now under formal investigation for homicide. More than 600 people have been arrested in France. Fires, damage to public property and clashes with police have been reported, leaving several people injured. There is a concern about police violence and systemic racism inside the country. President Macron announced a crisis meeting on Friday afternoon and denounced the violence in several cities as unjustifiable.
