We pray together for the Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers), who lost Br. Simukonde on Wednesday 29 March 2023. The tragedy took place at 9pm, when he was passing a checkpoint set up by the military police. Soldiers fired several times thinking that the vehicle in which they were traveling was a threat. Unfortunately, one of the shots killed Br. Moses. The military police have apologized in an official letter to the congregation. Br. Simukonde served in Kenya, Niger, and Burkina Faso. Let’s pray for him and his loved ones.

We thank God for the people who are using ancient techniques to save our common home. The Ant Studio New Delhi-based company is using the ancient technique called a beehive as an air conditioner. The technique can lower temperatures to a fraction of the energy that traditional air conditioning units use. It reduces 65% of CO2 emissions. It works with hollow terracotta cones, which are stacked to look like a beehive. They soak hundreds of stacked earthen pots in water and let the air pass through.

In Berlin, Germany, the city has developed a “wild plan” to integrate nature. The city has included a lot of green areas to allow fauna to cross all over. All the animals have been registered, fostering biodiversity. With this plan, the wildlife is integrated with human beings, which increases healthy spaces and more wellbeing for the citizens. At the same time, tt allows the growing of trees that help to reduce carbon dioxide and care for the planet. In this way, nature is integrated into urban spaces.

Let’s pray for peace in Jerusalem. On Tuesday, Israeli police entered Al-Aqsa Mosque where Palestinians united for the Ramadan prayers. According to the Israeli police, they entered to disperse agitators. Following the clashes, rockets were fired at Israel from the Gaza Strip. Tensions have been growing at the site amid an overlap of Muslim and Jewish holidays. May love prevail over hate, may God give wisdom and a peaceful heart to stop the violence and understand that we are all brothers and sisters.

We pray for Nigeria, where early this week, gunmen kidnapped eight secondary school students coming from school along with an unknown number of others. Armed gangs in the northwest of the country have carried out violent attacks against villagers, schools and motorists. It is unclear where the students were taken to, but often the kidnappers keep victims in the forest until they receive a ransom. Nigeria’s military has been fighting armed groups like Boko Haram in the northeast, leaving the kidnapping gangs to spread around.

We thank God for the small steps that are helping people to empower themselves and live an integral human development. In Africa, the Shea tree gives fruits that are exclusively harvested by women. This harvesting has become a development tool in some of the world’s poorest areas. Mali is one of the main producers of shea butter and in the rural commune of Siby, one thousand women work at the local cooperative Maison du Karitè.

We pray for Guatemala and Venezuela migrants in Mexico. On late Monday, a fire at a migrant detention facility killed 38 people and injured more than 28 in Ciudad Juarez near the US border. The Mexican President explained that the fire began during a protest by migrants inside the place. However, some Human Rights Organizations have called for an investigation to establish the facts of what happened. Authorities have been accused of abuse and use of excessive force against migrants who ask about their immigration status.

In Kenya, a youth group from Nairobi decided to act and transform the local Gatharaini river full of dumpsite, into a green space for their local community. In few months around 30 people rehabilitated one kilometer of the river, turning it into a green haven. Additional to the clearing of trash, they planted over 2000 trees and 800 bamboo shoots which will protect the river banks and purify the water.
