Let’s hear the cry of our children and young people. On May 3, in Serbia, a 13-year-old student entered an elementary school to shoot to kill eight fellow students and a security guard who tried to stop the child. The boy and his parents were arrested by police immediately after the shooting, but Serbian law does not allow a person who is less than 15 years to be prosecuted. On May 4, eight schoolteachers in Parachinar and Upper Kurram, India, were killed.

We thank God for scientists who are doing their best to save the planet. Scientists from NTU Singapore have found a way to transform waste paper into eco-friendly lithium batteries for smartphones and other devices. Paper accounts for a 5th of Singapore’s waste, most of which is incinerated, producing tons of CO2. By exposing the waste paper to high temperatures, they reduce it to pure carbon which can be turned into electrodes for batteries. This makes it much cheaper to produce and batteries last twice as long than traditional ones.

Let’s pray for Haiti that during this week the UN warned of an alarming surge in violence. More than 1600 homicides, rapes, kidnappings, and lynchings have been reported during the first quarter of 2023. It means that the number of criminalities has doubled since last year. The gangs are expanding in several areas that were considered safe. The political crisis within the country, with no government system, has made attacks very easy. The violence impedes people from reaching healthcare facilities, schools are closed and there is food insecurity.

We pray for migrants and those who are advocating for them, especially those in Libya. Last Thursday, people from the western city of Zawiya protested against militia groups accused of recruiting migrants. Hundreds of young people protested and called for a big demonstration to put pressure on these militias. They blocked roads and burned tires, demanding justice. Zawiya is a key departure point for migrants who seek to cross the Mediterranean to Europe.

Water hyacinths have become a pest in many waterways in over 50 countries in the world. Lake Tom Lesap, one of the largest freshwater lakes in Southeast Asia, is affected by it. In Cambodia, local women are making fashionable bags from hyacinths. They cut them, dry them in the sun for 2 weeks, and then they wash them. The women lay the steam out on a wooden platform and steam the plants over charcoal to kill bacteria and get the right color.

We pray for Yemen, where almost 80 people have died in a stampede during a charity event. According to the authorities, the causes of death are physical trauma, suffocation, and a lack of oxygen. Hundreds of people gathered in a school in Alsafia to receive the equivalent of 10USD. For Yemen, a country living through years of war and poor conditions, receiving that money was enough. The crowd who arrived at the place pushed each other. When the school gate opened, swarms of people rushed to enter.

Let’s pray for Papua New Guinea where last week an earthquake hit the East province of Spik. Eight people have been confirmed dead after the magnitude 7.0 earthquake. The death toll could be much higher. More than 800 houses have been destroyed. The most affected people are those who have built their homes in swampy places. The government is providing basic tools, especially clothes, mosquito nets and water containers to ensure health care. People in the area are scared since they have never experienced an earthquake like this before.
