Let’s pray for the Afghan women that have been banned from universities. On Tuesday, the Taliban told all public and private universities to suspend education of girls until further notice. The Taliban didn’t give a reason for that decision and the authorities are not answering any request for comment. Many known universities were blocked by Taliban vehicles on Wednesday to prevent women from entering the places. With Taliban control, girls have already been banned from high school.

We pray for the United States that is experiencing a deep freeze combined with a massive winter storm that could leave nearly 60% of the country under extreme weather alerts. People in the country were under winter storm advisories or warnings due to the risk of frostbite within minutes. Many flights have been cancelled or delayed. May God give us an open heart to hear the cry of our mother earth.

We thank God for people who are risking their lives in places of conflict. Since the invasion of Ukraine, a Kyiv bakery has been giving away 100,000 loaves to soldiers, hospitals and the elderly. This story inspires the world’s top bakers to create a recipe book. There is an idea of the global baking community to create a charity recipe book for Ukraine. Anna Makievska, the bakehouse founder, featured in Knead Peace with her recipe for flaxseed bread.

We pray for Peru, which is passing through a great political crisis. Last week, President Castillo announced that he would dissolve the Congress and would install an exception government. As a result, Congress dismissed the president due to “moral incapacity” and ordered his detention. The Vice president Boluarete assumed the presidency, while many riots arose in several cities of the country. Protesters ask for new elections, while those supporting the president ask for his liberation.

Let’s pray for Malaysia where at least 16 people have died due to a landslide in a campsite in the northeast of Kuala Lumpur. There were 92 people at the site when the landslide happened. Emergency services are looking for 17 missing people. Dozens have been pulled from the mud and debris and were taken to hospital, while others were able to escape.

A court in Queensland, Australia has blocked a proposal to construct a massive coal mine due to several concerns regarding human rights. According to the judge, “the emissions produced by the mine would threaten First Nations people and have massive environmental implications”. The project was estimated to have 40 million tonnes of coal generated each year over the next 25 years, becoming the largest coal mine in Australia.

Around 200 mostly Muslims Rohingya have been drifting for more than a week in the Andaman Sea after their boat broke down. The United Nations Refugee Agency have asked countries in Southeast Asia to help refugees. Migrants on board have been without food and water for days and are suffering dehydration. There is a big risk of fatalities in the coming days if there is not an answer from countries. People make these dangerous journeys to escape persecution at home in Myanmar.

We thank God for all the governments and civil society that are taking decisions to hear the cry of the Earth and the Poor. Germany will force plastic manufacturers in the country to pay litter cleanups. This idea was agreed by the Cabinet early in November, and will require makers of products containing single-use plastic to pay into a central fund that the government will manage. The measure will come into force in 2025. This will contribute to the cost of cleaning up litter in streets and parks.

We pray for the Democratic Republic of Congo that early this week 50 civilians were killed in the easter town of Kishishe. The army has accused the rebels of the M23 rebel group of violating the five-day-old ceasefire. Around tens of thousands people have been displaced of the ongoing fighting between the army forces and the M23. According to the UN and other international rights group there is not yet a clear number of fatalities.

COP 27 is finished and despite the lack of concrete agreements, we have good news. 85 insurers in Africa have pledged to create a tool to provide support to the most vulnerable communities. They will create the African Climate Risk Facility with $14 billion to help African countries to deal with climate disaster risks such as floods and droughts. With this insurance plan, Africa wants to create a local market-based funding tool to help countries to manage their financial risk of climate change.
