A man in Southern Senegal, Adama Diémé, started an ambitious project of planting five million trees over the next five years. The idea came when he returned to the Casamance region after a few years working in Europe. He was shocked that in villages that were populated with hundreds of gigantic trees in his youth, few of them remained.

We keep in our prayers Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI who has passed away today. As Pope Francis said, “Let’s pray together for him, that the Lord may bless him and that our Lady may keep him”. We reflect in gratitude for the many ways he has served our Church. His theological understandings have influenced the writings of Pope Francis, especially in Laudato Si’. During a painful time, he entered the difficult journey to confront sexual abuse in our Church. His remaining years of contemplative prayer have enriched our spiritual lives.
