Many countries around the world are dealing with wildfires that are killing the flora and fauna in many territories. Droughts, excess heat and our activity as human beings have caused numbers of devastating wildfires, worsened by climate change. Many people have fled from their houses due to the flames. The world’s temperature continues to rise, while governments around the world are trying to find short-term solutions to deal with it. We pray together for our Mother Earth and all human beings.

During the last weeks we have heard about droughts, fires, desertification, extreme temperatures and agricultural lands that have been affected by climate change in the North Hemisphere. The Southern Hemisphere is experiencing strong cold temperatures that are impacting areas which are not used to those low temperatures. Despite many international initiatives to tackle climate change, we need to continue asking our governments and ourselves how we can hear the cry of the Earth and the Poor clearly.

Panama, recognized as one of the richest countries in Central America, is experiencing national protests. The increase in prices for food, medicine and fuel generated citizen discontent and gave rise to other political and social demands. Teachers started the protest and other unions joined. The president decided to reduce fuel prices and announced that some food products would have a subsidy and a 10% reduction in expenditure. People did not consider those measures enough. On Tuesday, the government and some protest representatives agreed to dialogue about the basic claims.

Let’s pray for Brazil where at least 18 people died in a police raid on Rio Favelas. According to the State Public Defender’s Office, there are signs of major human rights violations in the raid. A law enforcement officer and a woman from the place were among those who died, while it is presumed that the other 16 are members of organized crime groups. It is said that about 400 officers were involved with support from four aircraft and 10 armored vehicles. The government supports the actions.

We pray for Europe where the heatwaves have increased the number of wildfires in many countries. The temperature has been rising by 40 degrees Celsius in many cities, and burning homes are threatening livelihoods. Families have been evacuated from their homes, while the flora and fauna has been destroyed by flames. The heatwaves are also impacting farmers, with severe droughts and declining lake levels and water source. Let us keep up our efforts to demand climate justice and take action in our daily lives to address climate change.

On July 6th 2022, twenty-two people from Mali died in a boat disaster off the coast of Libya. The boat had around 83 people on board, especially Malian nationalities. According to the International Organization for Migration, 61 were rescued and taken back to a detention center in Libya. This tragedy arrives in this hunger crisis that many countries are living in the world.

On June 13th 2022, the indigenous peoples in Ecuador started a protest to ask the government for their rights, the protection of the environment, fuel prices and household prices. For 18 days, the country experienced strikes, and 7 people died. On 30th June, the government accepted the invitation of the indigenous leaders to open and keep a space for dialogue, and accepted 4 requests. Among them is “to stop mining and oil exploitation in the land of the indigenous people”.

We pray for our brothers and sisters in Australia where climate change continues to affect the country. In the Town of Windsor, north-west of Australia, some roads have become small rivers and houses have been covered with water. Part of Sydney received eight months worth of rain in four days. Many people have left their homes, while thousands have no power. This is the third time that this disaster occurred in the country during the last year. Floods have touched many families and people are exhausted and emotionally broken.
