On June 29th, 20 bodies were found in the Libyan desert. The bodies were discovered by a truck driver who was traveling through the desert. According to rescuers, it is presumed that the group died of thirst. Two of the bodies are presumed to be Libyans, while the other bodies were believed to be migrants from Chad who were crossing into Libya. The country has been the dominant transit point for people fleeing war and poverty in Africa and parts of the Middle East, making Libya a dangerous crossroad.

We pray for Mexico where at least 11 people have been killed and 33 are still missing due to Hurricane Agatha. Flooding and mudslides are the result of the Hurricane that hit southern Mexico, in the State of Oaxaca. The hurricane came ashore on Monday and weakened as it passed over land. The majority of deaths are in the small towns in the mountains, inland from the coast. Scientists warned of increasingly strong and frequent tropical storms in the Pacific and Atlantic coast, amid rising sea temperatures.

During the last week, the Gulf has been experiencing disastrous environmental conditions due to climate change. The orange sky with a flurry of sand and dust storms is affecting the sub-region. The warfare, mismanagement of water, the construction of more dams and the extreme desertification and dryness are contributing to this phenomenon. We have seen that the heat waves in India and other parts of the world are a result of a climate-stressed planet.

Let’s pray for the refugees of Rohingya. At least 17 of them, including children, have been reported dead after a boat capsized on the Myanmar coast. The boat, with 90 people on board, was on its way to Malaysia across the Bay of Bengal. Some of the bodies washed up on the beaches in Rakhine, while 50 passengers are still missing. According to the UN, it is shocking news.

The Democratic Republic of Congo has experienced increasing violence. During the past week, the fighting between the army and M23 rebels has displaced more than 72000 people. The M23 rebel group claims the representation of the Tutsis ethnic group’s interests. Rebels have attacked an army base in the area, near 20 km from Goma. According to the UN, people have fled and 7000 have reported crossing the border to Uganda, while other people have taken shelter in other cities close to Goma.

Let’s pray for the United States. Early this week, a gunman opened fire in a primary school in Uvalde, Texas, killing 19 children. The gunman crashed his car near the school and walked inside the building, shooting more than a hundred times. After the gunman was shot dead, police found 1650 rounds of ammunition. May God give strength to the families and wisdom to the authorities to take actions to prevent these situations.

There is a glimmer of hope in Yemen. Thanks to some dialogue between the parties involved in the war, the country had a two-month truce which brought hope again. This is a significant step towards the end of a conflict that has killed thousands of people and obliged others to flee. Although bombs stopped falling, the devastating conflict has impoverished the country and led it to one of the worst world humanitarian crises.

The hunger crisis in Africa’s Sahel region is getting worse. According to the UN, 18 million people will face severe hunger in the next three months as an effect of the invasion of Russia in Ukraine, the COVID-19 pandemic and climate shocks. The largest numbers at risk are Burkina Faso, Chad, Niger and Mali. Violence, insecurity, poverty and the high cost of living are pushing people to more. Let’s keep our prayers and take actions to support our brothers and sisters dealing with several crises in the world.

The Laudato Si’ Week will take place from 22 to 29 May 2022.The theme for the week is “Listening and Journeying Together.” The eight-day global event will be guided by the following quote from Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’: “Bringing the human family together to protect our common home” (LS 13). The JPIC Commission is co-sponsoring the event on the 26 May called “Investing on Laudato Si”. From 11:30 am – 6:00 pm (Rome Time).
