On February 6th, 2023, two earthquakes of magnitudes 7.8 and 7.6 killed more than 22.000 people and destroyed entire neighborhoods in Southeastern Turkey and Northwestern Syria. The situation is heartbreaking and the frantic search operations continue while the freezing temperatures and damaged infrastructure make the rescues very difficult. Many people, volunteers, governments, rescue groups are providing aid. In Syria, a country already affected by the 12-year war, rescuers are working with their bare hands and some equipment to dig into rubble.

Let’s continue to pray for Pope Francis’ visit to South Sudan. Yesterday, 27 civilians were killed and many were injured due to a cattle-related attack in Lire Payam, South Sudan. Pope Francis has just finished his visit to DRC. For years, the Holy Father expressed his strong desire to travel to South Sudan, and now he will spend three days in the country on an ecumenical pilgrimage for peace.

We pray for Pakistan, where early this week, at least 100 people were killed and more than 200 were wounded in the deadliest attack in a decade. This deadly suicide bombing occurred in a mosque located inside a high-security police compound. Most causalities were police officers. The authorities blamed the Pakistan Taliban (TTP) for the attack. However, the TTP spokesperson distanced the group from the bombing, saying that they do not target mosques or religious sites.

In Antalya, Turkey, a large solar power plant has been built to provide free energy for local farmers. The region is a crucial hub for fruit and vegetable production for domestic use and exportation. Around 60.000 people will benefit from this scheme that helps farmers to irrigate their areas and to crop their products. Thanks to this support from the municipality, the local farmers do irrigation almost for free. This helps to cut carbon emissions.

Early this week, eleven people were killed in fights between tribes in Enga Province in Papua New Guinea. According to the media, the incident occurred after two people were found killed. As a retaliation, armed men shot and killed 11 villagers and kidnapped 11 children, who were rescued by the police and soldiers. The causes of the violence are still unknown. The tribal conflict is a sensitive issue and the authorities have asked them to enforce a ceasefire.

We pray for Ukraine and Russia’s war. Each day many people die and it has become a normal situation in the world. A major side effects of the conflict is the ecological disaster that is affecting both countries. Hunters, fishermen and farmers from both countries are starting to use dangerous products for their survival, which is killing wild animals. War is the extermination of not only human beings, but also the flora and fauna of the places. We cannot get used to war and conflict.
