We thank God for those who embrace new recycling techniques. In Ghana, Michael Tetteh founded the Tetteh Hot Glassblowing Company after training in art in the Netherlands and France. Despite limited opportunities, Michael persevered and established the company, which recycles glass waste in Ghana, where most glass ends up in landfills due to the lack of a formal recycling system. He creates beautiful vases and other products from recycled glass, sold locally and internationally.

Let’s pray for India and Bangladesh, which were hit by torrential rains from cyclone Remal. In the northeastern state of India, stone quarry collapses and landslides resulted in the deaths of around 20 people and trapped seven others. Rescue workers are working hard to cut through the stone slabs in search of survivors, despite battling heavy rains and loose soil. This powerful cyclone has already struck Eastern India and Bangladesh, claiming 16 lives and causing power outages in several areas.

We pray for Papua New Guinea, where a devastating landslide buried the entire village of Yambali on May 27, 2024. The exact number of people killed is uncertain, but the UN estimates around 670 victims. The Prime Minister has promised to provide more information about the scale of the destruction and the lives lost. The UN and the International Organization for Migration are supporting the government’s response efforts.

We pray for New Caledonia, where six people died in violent unrest at barricades blocking roads. New Caledonia, a French territory, has long-standing tensions among indigenous people, descendants of colonists, and former prisoners’ descendants. Hundreds of militaries and police have been deployed to control the situation, marking the worst violence since the 1980s. Recent changes to the French Constitution allow residents who have lived in New Caledonia for 10 years to vote in provincial elections, which independence supporters fear will marginalize the Kanak indigenous community, about 40% of the population.

Let’s pray for Nigeria, where armed groups attacked villagers during a late-night raid on Tuesday. This attack follows a pattern of violence in the Northcentral part of the country, driven by conflicts over water, land, and other natural resources control. The number of casualties is not yet clear, but government officials claim there are only 12. The attackers opened fire on villagers in the Wase Zurak community, forcing many to flee. People have repeatedly expressed their fear and concern about assailants attacking villages and escaping before security forces arrive.

We thank God for the alternative ways people find to care for each other and the planet. Did you know that toilet paper rolls can be an ally in your garden? These rolls, made of cardboard, are a favorite shelter for earthworms. They decompose easily, allowing earthworms to use them as shelter or food. Rolls also aerate the soil, which is vital for plant roots. It’s a great idea to save and reuse toilet paper rolls in this way.

We pray for the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, which has been severely affected by intense and widespread flooding, resulting in the loss of at least 100 lives with 130 still missing. Over 230,000 people have been displaced, and rescue services are diligently working to reach isolated areas inundated by floodwaters. Authorities have urged displaced individuals not to return to flooded areas, as rescuers strive to evacuate and locate people. This is considered the worst natural disaster in the state’s history.

On May 4th, 2024, a bombing attack in two camps, Lac Vert and Mugunga, in eastern DR Congo resulted in the tragic loss of 18 lives and left 32 others injured. As of now, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and both the Congolese army and a rebel group known as M23 have accused each other of perpetrating the bombings.

We thank God for the nature-based solutions that cities are implementing to combat climate change. In China, landscape architect Kongjian Yu proposed the concept of sponge cities, utilizing natural methods to effectively absorb and manage rainwater. These cities incorporate porous pavements that mimic soil, allowing for water absorption and gradual release into the air. Yu also introduced natural vegetation such as grass, willows, and reeds, along with overflow ponds and permeable footpaths.

Let’s pray for Africa, affected by heavy rains causing victicms, floods, landslides, and displacements. In Tanzania, at least 155 people have been killed due to floods and landslides, while 55,000 households have been destroyed, affecting 200,000 people. In Kenya, 35 people have been reported dead, and the number could increase as the situation is not yet under control. In Nigeria, 100 inmates escaped from a prison after heavy overnight rains destroyed parts of the facility. Authorities have recaptured 10 inmates, while the police are searching for the others.
