We pray for the people in Burkina Faso. According to Human Rights Watch, there was a military campaign against civilians accused of links to armed groups. The military forces are accused of executing 223 civilians, including at least 56 children, from the villages of Nondin and Soro in February 2024. Reports were compiled from interviews conducted with survivors and the geolocation of eight mass graves. This is not the first country where civilians have been caught in the middle of the fights between armed groups and security forces.

Let us pray for peace in the Middle East amidst escalating tensions between nations. This morning, Israel carried out an attack on Iran in retaliation for Iran’s raids on Israel last week. The increasing number of attacks in Palestine, Syria, and Lebanon is causing fear of a potential escalation of the conflict. Despite the efforts of civil society, organizations, and various movements around the world, the situation appears to remain unchanged.

We pray for Kazakhstan and Russia, which have been affected by devastating floods, resulting in the displacement of more than 125,000 in Southern Russia and Northern Kazakhstan. The melting snow has surged into the rivers, rapidly increasing water levels to unprecedented heights within hours. This has led to disruptions in power and water supply, with the primary source of drinkable water being flooded. Authorities in both countries have urged citizens to evacuate, recognizing that the situation could worsen.

We pray for Mozambique, where 94 people lost their lives following the sinking of a fishing boat carrying people trying to flee the mainland after receiving misinformation about cholera. The boat was not licensed to carry passengers and reports indicate that a tidal wave hit the vessel. The passengers were fleeing due to a lack of clear information about the cholera outbreak, which caused them to panic. Mozambique, one of the world’s poorest countries, has recorded more than 15,000 cases of waterborne diseases and 32 deaths since October.

We thank God for the innovative solutions to combat climate change being developed by people around the world. Michael VanDuzee recognized that while plastic is convenient and durable, its production from oil contributes to environmental degradation. Inspired by online videos demonstrating homemade plastic creation, he experimented with producing his own biodegradable plastic using cornstarch, sugar, glycerin, vinegar, and water. Mixing these ingredients and heating them while stirring, he then spread the mixture onto a silicone mat and allowed it to set for three days.

We pray for Haiti, amidst widespread violence and chaos following the assassination of its Prime Minister in 2021. The nation faces a power struggle among rival gangs, exacerbated by the acting Prime Minister’s decision to extend the transitional period until August 2025 instead of calling for elections as promised. This has fueled discontent among the population, leading to attacks on state institutions by gangs. Last week, 4,500 prisoners escaped, enabling criminal organizations to seize control of the capital.

We thank God for all people who are supporting to rejuvenate Mother Earth. From Australia to Ontario, cities are undergoing transformations, replacing concrete and asphalt to reintroduce nature. In Portland, US, Depave, a non-profit organization, is leading efforts to remove sections of urban crust, liberating soil that was once covered by concrete on streets and common spaces. Fifty volunteers recently cleared approximately 1670 square meters of concrete from the grounds of a local church, facilitating the return of nature.
